The high school FTC team, RoboEpic, and their mentors, Gail Sestito and Doug Rendell, attended the annual CT F.I.R.S.T. University Day. This event, sponsored by Central Connecticut State University, is run by experienced coaches, mentors, organizers, and students involved with F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, founded by Dean Kamen and Woody Flowers). This full day event is designed to assist all mentors and coaches, new and old) with the many aspects of running Jr FLL (Junior FIRST Lege League for upper primary school students), FLL (FIRST Lego League for middle school), FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge for high school), and FRC (FIRST Robotics Challenge for high school) teams. A plethora of workshops are run throughout the day; high school students and adults can choose the sessions they wish to attend. There are workshops ranging from rules of the games, robot construction tips, and programming tutorials. A workshop run by Gail and Doug focused on “Teamwork and Team-building” for FLL. Over the past three years, many of their various teams have won the “teamwork” award, so they shared their secrets to running “well-oiled” middle school teams. It was a very successful day, and now the coaches, and team members feel prepared for this 2012-2013 season of FIRST! Let the games begin!
